Useful to expose directional errors. Test eyes individually and choose a distance and correction that, if possible, keeps one direction in focus but exposes a slight error in other directions. It may be possible to long-term calibrate eyes by regularly staring at slight image errors until an eye responds. But there is almost no data on this. Strange how nobody seems to be researching it.
